Dastarkhwan


A set of editorial illustrations accompanying Farah Yameen’s article on Dastarkhwans, a length of cloth on which Muslim families across South Asia eat meals. Farah’s essay examines the Dastarkhwan as a holder of memory and heritage, and a valuable cultural artefact in South Asia today.
For my response I wanted to depict a fantastical exaggerated view of the family using the Dastarkhwan. Playing will scales and geometries, the visual depicts family and gathering, and draws parallels between food and prayer, as suggested by the brilliant essay.
